On Saturday evening, a 4-year-old child was killed in a three-vehicle crash near Maple Park in unincorporated Virgil Township.

According to a report from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 6:40pm when a 2016 Chrysler 200 driven by 20-year-old Edgar Barrios of DeKalb, traveling eastbound on Route 38 near Francis Road, for an unknown reason crossed the center line into westbound traffic, striking a 2018 Jeep Compass driven by 30-year-old Antwoineia Blanton, also of DeKalb, that was traveling westbound.

After striking the Compass, the Chrysler then struck a 2010 Subaru Forester driven by 30-year-old Katie Petravickwhich of Washington, IL, who was also traveling westbound on Route 38.

Blanton was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  There was a 4-year-old passenger in the Jeep as well who was originally transported to Delnor Hospital and then flown to Laurie’s Children’s hospital with life threatening injuries.

The child was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The child was seated in the backseat properly secured in a child safety seat.

Barrios was transported to Delnor Hospital and then transferred to Loyola Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Petravickwhich was treated and released at the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.  It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash at this time.  If anyone witnessed or has any information regarding the crash we ask that they call the Kane County Sheriff’s Office Investigations division at 630-444-1103.
