As noted in these pages before, there is something very special about police dogs and their partners.
It goes beyond the normal owner-pet relationship which, as most pet owners know, can be deeply familial. For police dogs, the relationship is also a professional one, as the animal becomes a true partner in serving the community and keeping citizens safe.
Thus the death of a police dog provokes profound emotions well beyond the grief of the owner.
On Thursday, the Elgin Police Department announced the passing of K9 Bauer, a German Shephard who had served EPD since 2015. Bauer was put to rest pursuant to a medical condition previously diagnosed.
Chief of Police Ana Lalley posted the announcement on the EPD Facebook page yesterday:
“Yesterday, EPD members paid tribute to K9 Bauer as he was laid to rest. This was a difficult decision for Officer Justin Brown, his family, and his extended family at the department, but one that was in the best interest of Bauer due to his medical condition that he was diagnosed with.
“Bauer honorably served since 2015 and has been part of both Officer Brown’s and EPD’s family for a very long time. Bauer was a great partner, family member and served the community for many years. He will be dearly missed and we thank him for the service he has provided the community. The department’s prayers are with Officer Brown and his family during this difficult time. Officer Brown was a true partner to Bauer, taking care of him, protecting him, and showing him love and support every day.
“The department is currently planning a celebration of life ceremony for Bauer and will provide the details to the community as soon as they are finalized. I would also like to thank Dundee Animal Hospital for all their service, help, and especially their compassion as they cared for Bauer.”
Bauer’s End of Watch Call was captured in a video, presented below.
