Yesterday afternoon, a man allegedly committed a hit-and-run in Sleepy Hollow and then crashed his vehicle into a tree while trying to escape.

The driver, 58-year-old Martin Contreras, was transported to an Elgin area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The condition of the victim of the hit-and-run has not been disclosed.

On Saturday at approximately 4:35pm, Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a traffic crash with injuries at the intersection of Sleepy Hollow Rd and Boncosky Road in unincorporated Dundee Township.

The investigation indicated that a Cadillac Escalade, driven by Contreras, was involved in a hit-and-run traffic crash at Route 31 and Boncosky Road in the village limits of Sleepy Hollow.  Contreras failed to stop at the initial crash and drove west on Boncosky Road at a high rate of speed. He failed to stop at the T intersection at Sleepy Hollow Rd, where he struck a tree and large berm, killing him.

The crash remains under investigation by Kane County Sheriff Detectives.
