Earlier this month, Anderson Humane, the South Elgin-based animal welfare advocate and shelter, rescued 91 beagles from an abusive puppy mill in Virginia and successfully placed them in foster homes.
On Friday, Anderson announced that it was heading back for more.
“Thanks to the outpouring of support we received from our previous beagle transport, we are very excited to share that we will be making the trek back to VA to rescue more! We reached out to everyone that previously signed our beagle interest list, so we are all set on fosters.”
The dogs are among approximately 4,000 beagles rescued from a Virginia-based breeder/research company called Envigo. On July 15, the Department of Justice and Envigo entered into a consent decree whereby Envigo agreed to a permanent prohibition on engaging in any activity at its facility in Cumberland, Virginia, that requires an Animal Welfare Act (AWA) license. Envigo also agreed to relinquish all remaining beagles – some 4,000 – at the Cumberland facility to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
Envigo has been found guilty of dozens of federal regulation violations, resulting in dogs being ill, injured, underfed, and, in the worst cases, dead.
While foster homes are already arranged for, Anderson will need additional assistance to care the dogs, including:
- A Full Physical Exam
- Spay and/or Neuter, including pain medication
- Heartworm Tests
- Bordatella Vaccines
- Distemper Vaccine
- Rabies Vaccine
- Pyrantel
- Heartworm Preventative
- Flea and Tick preventative
- Microchip (if needed)
Donations to support this treatment can be made on the Anderson Humane Facebook page or on their website, https://ahconnects.org/.
Once beagles are available for adoption, they will be added to Anderson’s adoptable site, which you can view here: https://ahconnects.org/adoption-all-locations/
