The North Aurora Police Department responded Saturday evening to a report of a large group of people fighting and the presence of a firearm in North Aurora Island Park.
Four people are in custody after the incident and one handgun was confiscated.
At 7:04 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to North Aurora Island Park, near State Street and the Fox River, for a fight in progress. While in route, officers were warned that someone in the melee might have a gun. When the officers arrived they found a group of people fighting with approximately 50 people present overall.
Witnesses informed the officers that a female had a gun and was trying to get into a vehicle. Officers detained the female and found a handgun concealed on her person.
When officers reached the group fighting, one individual was already partially on the ground and witnesses indicated that he had started the fight. He was taken into custody without incident.
Officers observed a male starting fights with others in the crowd. He, too, was taken into custody without further incident.
Finally, officers observed a male running southbound from the scene. Officers caught and detained him without further incident after a short foot chase.
All four suspects were transported to the North Aurora Police Department for processing. After reviewing the case with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, the following charges were brought:
• The female, 20 years of age and a resident of Hazel Crest, was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon & Possession of a Firearm without a FOID;
• The three accused men, ranging from 22 – 27 years of age and sharing the same surname, and believed to be residents of Chicago, were all charged with Mob Action.
Officers from the Aurora Police Department and Batavia Police Department and deputies from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene and assisted. Officers remained on the scene while remaining people left the park.
