A Happy Ending! Anderson Humane Successfully Places Rescued Beagles

Approximately 100 beagles rescued from an abusive puppy mill in Virginia were successfully placed in foster homes yesterday by Anderson Humane, the South Elgin-based animal welfare advocate and shelter.

According to a post on its social media account, Anderson reported that Tuesday morning at around midnight the beagle transport arrived from Virginia. Each crate was carried into the South Elgin shelter one by one. The puppies got to stretch their legs and take a potty break outside. Each animal got new, clean crates and a snack before dinner.

In the morning, the beagles played outside and were evaluated. Fosters began arriving for pickup, and every beagle was placed in their temporary homes.

The lives of these puppies may have turned out very differently.

They were among approximately 4,000 beagles rescued from a Virginia-based breeder/research company called Envigo. On July 15, the Department of Justice and Envigo entered into a consent decree whereby Envigo agreed to a permanent prohibition on engaging in any activity at its facility in Cumberland, Virginia, that requires an Animal Welfare Act (AWA) license. Envigo also agreed to relinquish all remaining beagles – some 4,000 – at the Cumberland facility to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Envigo has been found guilty of dozens of federal regulation violations, resulting in dogs being ill, injured, underfed, and, in the worst cases, dead.

Anderson committed to taking in 100 dogs and helping them find safe, loving, and happy homes.
