It seems straight of 101 Dalmations, but this puppy rescue is all too real.
On July 15, the Department of Justice and Virginia-based breeder/research company Envigo entered into a consent decree whereby Envigo agreed to a permanent prohibition on engaging in any activity at its facility in Cumberland, Virginia, that requires an Animal Welfare Act (AWA) license. Envigo also agreed to relinquish all remaining beagles – some 4,000 – at the Cumberland facility to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
Envigo has been found guilty of dozens of federal regulation violations, resulting in dogs being ill, injured, underfed, and, in the worst cases, dead.
Anderson Humane, the South Elgin-based animal welfare advocate and shelter, is participating in the national efforts to rescue the beagles from Envigo, and has committed to taking in 100 dogs and helping them find safe, loving, and happy homes.
Anderson staff will make the trip to Virginia to bring these dogs back to the Chicagoland area in early August. They are already working to find fosters and are starting to collect a list of interested adopters.
If you are interested in fostering or adopting one of these animals, please contact Anderson at https://ahconnects.org/beagles/ or call 847-697-2880.
