Three people were killed dead and two others injured after a shooter opened fire in the food court of a Greenwood, Indiana, shopping mall Sunday evening, police say.
Greenwood is a suburb of Indianapolis.
According to Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison, around 6:00 pm, multiple people called 911 to report an active shooter at the Greenwood Park Mall.
The victims include one male and four females, including a 12-year-old girl whose parents brought her to the hospital with minor injuries after the shooting, the chief said, noting she is expected to be “just fine.” The second injured victim was hospitalized and in stable condition as of Sunday evening, Ison said.
Ison said that the unidentified male gunman was shot and killed by a lawfully armed 22-year-old man who “observed the shooting in progress,” .
Police remain unclear as to the type of weapon used in the attack, as no weapon had yet been retrieved from the scene.
On Facebook, Greenwood Mayor Mark Meyers posted “This tragedy hits at the core of our community. Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders.”
In a statement issued Sunday evening, Meyers praised the man who took down the shooter.
“This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation,” the mayor said.
The attack is just the latest in a series of such mass shootings around the country, suggesting a “copy-cat” phenomenon may be in play. According to a report from ABC News, a potential mass shooting at the FedExForum in Memphis was thwarted Saturday, while another potential shooting was stopped in Virginia two weeks ago.
