With Fox Valley municipalities split on whether to go forward with their annual 4th of July fireworks displays in the aftermath of the Highland Park shooting Monday morning, we asked readers for their views on the subject.
The results of our (unscientific) poll reflect the decisions of the municipalities: basically an even split between “go” and “no-go.”
Approximately 51% of respondents believed that municipalities should not have cancelled fireworks celebrations. (Exact wording of response: “Don’t cancel. We must show resolve and not alter our way of life in the face of such evil.”
Approximately 36% supported the following statement: “Cancel. We must show sensitivity to and solidarity with the grieving in Highland Park.”
Approximately 13% supported the following statement: “Cancel for security reasons.”
The poll is still open and can be taken here.
