On October 1, 2018, Rene Cuanetl of Queens, New York, sexually assaulted an Aurora child younger than 13 years old. Cuanetl knew the victim.
Yesterday, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser announced that a jury had found Cuanetl guilty of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, Class X felony, and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Class 2 felony.
Cuanetl faces a minimum sentence of 15 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
“I hope this verdict brings peace and a sense of justice to this victim/survivor, and puts her in a place of safety,” Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Rodger said after the verdict.” “She has shown so much bravery during this prosecution. My thanks to her parents, who immediately contacted the police upon learning of her abuse.”
Kane County Judge Alice C. Tracy set Cuanetl’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. on May 13, 2022, in Courtroom 313 at the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and sentencing.
In addition to the prison term, Cuanetl must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act.
Cuanetl remains in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $750,000 bail. Judge Tracy revoked bond upon conviction.
