On Tuesday, Adam Salerno, founder of iconic restaurant Salerno’s on the Fox, passed away, according to an announcement on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
Salerno and his establishment have been a fixture of St. Charles life since 1975, when the restaurant first opened its doors along the Fox River.
“Unfortunately, Salerno’s lost one of our rocks who built Salerno’s on the Fox. Adam passed peacefully on Tuesday, February 9th.
“Adam came to this country not knowing a word of English but becoming a legend in many people’s eyes,” the FB post stated. “He didn’t work a day because he lived doing what he loved. He didn’t work with words, he worked beside you with action. Salerno’s on the Fox was his passion!! He loved making customers happy through food, atmosphere and making each occasion a special one.”
Former mayor Ray Rogina sang the praises of Salerno.
“A very sad day in St. Charles. Adam Salerno was part of an ‘all star lineup’ of quality St. Charles entrepreneurs. The friendships he established that began as customers resonates around our city. The quality of food, service and satisfaction was his trademark for over 40 years.
“His smile and banter as you entered the restaurant was second to none. His love for St. Charles–past, present and future–was always evident. When you stopped by Salerno’s, you felt like part of his family. After all, you were part of his glorious family.
“I interacted with numerous quality St. Charles business owners in my time as mayor. Adam was always one of my favorites. He will be sorely missed in our community but will remain as a role model for how to interact and treat customers. God bless you sir. Rest in peace.”
Visitation will take place Tuesday at Salerno’s Rosedale Chapels at 450 W. Lake Street in Roselle from 3pm to 9pm. Final viewing and prayers will be at 8am Wednesday, followed by the funeral at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, 1S314 Summit Avenue in Oak Brook Terrace at 10am.
