Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article indicated that this incident resulted in the death of the victim. That was not accurate. We regret the error (although we’re thrilled that we were wrong!).
Kane County Sherriff’s deputies, working off surveillance video and and the testimony of an unidentified independent witness, have identified the vehicle involved in Monday’s hit-and run in St. Charles Township, and its driver, a 47 year-old Elgin man.
At approximately 4:15pm Monday afternoon, Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the intersection of Illinois Rt. 25 and Gilbert St. in Unincorporated St. Charles Township for a report of a hit-and-run traffic crash. Deputies discovered that a 2020 Harley Davidson 3-wheel motorcycle was traveling north on Rt. 25 and stopped at a red light at the intersection of Gilbert St. A red or maroon color SUV was also traveling north on Rt. 25 and approached the motorcycle from behind at a high rate of speed. The SUV struck the motorcycle and fled the scene north on Rt. 25.
The driver of the motorcycle, a 72 year old resident of St. Charles, was transported to an Elgin area hospital with potential life threating injuries.
After having reviewed surveillance video, sharing information on social media and the press, and hearing the testimony of an unidentified independent witness, Kane County detectives were able to track down the vehicle and suspect to the 500 block of Harrison Street in Elgin. Ultimately, detectives were able to interview the suspect on Friday, when he admitted to striking the motorcycle and not stopping because he did not have a valid driver’s license.
The suspect was charged with Failure to Report an Injury Accident, a class 2 felony; Aggravated Reckless Driving, a class 4 felony; and Driving While License Suspended – second offense, a class 4 felony.
