An Aurora man has been charged with felony burglary and criminal damage to property as the result of an ongoing Naperville Police Department investigation into the incidents of vandalism and looting that occurred in downtown Naperville on June 1, 2020.
The accused, a 25 year-old man, has been charged with burglary for allegedly entering Pandora Jewelry on the 100 block of S. Main Street and committing a theft. He is also charged with criminal damage to property for allegedly punching and kicking the windows of Beidelman Furniture on the 200 block of S. Washington Street, causing between $500 and $10,000 in damage.
He is currently in federal custody on charges that he maliciously attempted to damage and destroy Egg Harbor Café on the 100 block of Jackson Avenue with an explosive device on that same night (June 1, 2020).
On June 1, 2020, the Naperville Police Department, assisted by numerous law enforcement agencies, addressed incidents of looting, vandalism and other acts of violence in downtown Naperville.
A group estimated to be between 250 and 300 people moved through downtown between 9 p.m. and approximately midnight, vandalizing and/or looting more than 30 downtown businesses. Several businesses in other parts of the city were also burglarized. Eleven arrests were made the night of the incident, and Naperville Police have worked with partner agencies to continue to investigate the crimes committed on that night.
“Our detectives are second to none when it comes to thoroughly investigating a crime and building a solid case,” said Interim Chief of Police Jason Arres. “This is yet another example of their relentless work paying off. I’m thankful for their hard work, the assistance of our law enforcement partners, and the support of the State’s Attorney’s Office in approving charges.”
