A Campton Hills man who is charged with beating of his mother with a baseball bat until she died has been given until July 23rd to come up with a plea deal or face trial, according to reporting by Brenda Schory in the Kane County Chronicle.
According to published police reports at the time (March 2019), authorities say the accused awoke in his bedroom the morning of March 24 to what he believed was an intruder. He claims he grabbed a bat and began striking the person in the head in what he believed was self-defense, not realizing that the person was his mother.
Mary Summerwill later died of her injuries.
Prosecutors say the accused’s belief that he was acting in self-defense was unreasonable “because of his alcohol impairment.” However, police have not released his blood alcohol level.
According to court records, the accused has been charged with second degree murder, a Class 1 felony.
