Aurora Police have arrested and charged a Wheaton man in connection with five different armed robberies in the City of Aurora during February and March.
February 22nd – Approximately 7:38 p.m.: Aurora Police responded to For More Liquor in the 100 block of South Broadway Street for a report of an armed robbery. According to the witnesses, one suspect entered the store, displayed a handgun, and demanded money, cigarettes, and liquor.
February 23rd – Approximately 8:43 p.m.: Aurora Police responded to the same store for a report of another armed robbery. Witnesses told officers three suspects entered the store, two were armed with handguns, and one was armed with a knife. The suspects again demanded money, cigarettes, and liquor.
February 25th – Approximately 9:50 p.m.: Aurora Police responded to the One Stop in the 200 block of South Lake Street a report of an armed robbery. Witnesses told officers two suspects entered the store, and one displayed a handgun.
March 1st – Approximately 12:55 a.m.: Aurora Police responded to the 7-Eleven store in the 1600 block of Montgomery Road for a report of an armed robbery. Witnesses told officers two suspects entered the store, and one displayed a handgun.
In each incident, Aurora Police detectives responded to the scene and interviewed witnesses, obtained video recordings, forensic evidence, and other key pieces of evidence. During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that there had been other armed robberies in Marengo, Downer’s Grove, and Naperville. In each of those robberies, at least one of the suspects matched the description of the suspects in the armed robberies in Aurora.
Detectives from these agencies worked together to identify and build a case against the suspect. Over the past few months, detectives have gathered and examined numerous pieces of physical and digital evidence, interviewed several victims and witnesses, and followed up on many leads to be able to build a case against the suspect in the armed robberies.
The case was presented to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the following felony charges were authorized against the accused man, a 27-year-old resident of Wheaton:
- Five counts of Armed Robbery with Firearm – Class X Felony
- Five counts of Felon Possess or Use Firearm (Prior Conviction) – Class 2 Felony
- One count of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon – Class 3
On June 11th, the accused was arrested in Aurora without incident and appeared in Kane County Bond Call on Monday morning.
Beyond the Aurora Police Department, the investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Marengo Police Department, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, the Naperville Police Department, the Downers Grove Police Department, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Illinois Department of Corrections, and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
