A Chicago man who has been wanted on a warrant in the 2018 shooting death of 25 year-old Shaprie R Smith-Tate of Elgin is finally in custody.

The 26-year-old man, the victim’s brother, is in custody of the Chicago police after being apprehended after a traffic stop recently.  The man had eluded authorities for over 3 years.

He has been charged with:

  • First-degree murder, 2 counts
  • Attempted first-degree murder, Class X felony, 2 counts
  • Aggravated battery with a firearm, Class X felony, 3 counts

The charges stem from an altercation that took place in the parking lot of D Hangout Bar and Grill in Elgin on the afternoon of September 9, 2018.  During the altercation, the accused allegedly fired multiple shots from a handgun, striking four people, and fled from the scene.  One of those struck, Ms. Smith-Tate, died that day as a result of her injuries.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on June 16.

The Elgin police Department conducted the investigation.
