The Cubs made a valiant effort but came up short Monday night in Atlanta.
After Cubs starting pitcher Zack Davies gave up 4 runs in the first inning, it was an uphill climb for Chicago, particularly given their up-and-down offensive output.
But Kris Bryant, in left field for this game, came up with the bases loaded in the third and knotted it up at 4 with his 6th career Grand Slam against Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton.
It was not enough, however, as the Braves quickly regained the lead as shortstop Dansby Swanson homered against Davies in the bottom half of the frame.
Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras added a two-run blast in the 7th to bring the Cubs within 1, but the Braves’ relief corps closed it out for the win.
The teams play each other against this evening in Atlanta.
