The Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets 4-3 in 10 innings Thursday night, securing a sweep of the 3-game series at Wrigley.
Cubs relief pitcher Dan Winkler, who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th, secured the win. The Cubs are now at .500 for the season, 9-9.
The bottom of the 10th started with Cubs shortstop Javy Baez on second base (due to the rule changes embraced by the league last year in hopes of avoiding long, draining extra-inning affairs).
Mets reliever Edwin Díaz hit third baseman Matt Duffy with the first pitch to put two runners on, and David Bote sacrificed them to second and third. Pinch-hitter Eric Sogard was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Heyward then pinch-hit and rapped a sharp grounder into right field, scoring Baez with the winning run.
The Cubs play the Brewers today at 1:20 at Wrigley.
