Must Play Golf Courses in Lake Geneva

The Lake Geneva region is known for water recreation and its Shore Path that allows you to get up close to famous lakeside estates such as the Wrigley estate built by Wrigley’s chewing gum fame.

The region is also home to many golf courses with several designed by golf legends Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino – as well as designer Pete Dye and architect Robert Cupp. So the next time your planning a visit to Lake Geneva for pleasure or business, be sure to make time for golf.

Whether you are a serious golfer or a beginner, there is more than one course for you to enjoy. Ranging from championship to par-3 level experiences, the golf courses in the Lake Geneva offer beautiful landscapes and fun for friends, family, and coworkers. There are also numerous driving ranges, an indoor golf simulator, and private and group lessons for all ages and skill levels. Here are the highlights of the areas must play golf courses.

Geneva National Golf Club
Voted Top 10 Wisconsin Golf Courses by GolfWeek and Golf Digest, Geneva National Golf Club features 54 holes of legendary golf designed by the masters, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino. All the courses at Geneva National feature manicured bent grass tees, fairways and greens, as well as five tee boxes offering a great golf experience for every level of player.

Pro Tip: Hole 9. This challenging par 4 is the longest on the Palmer course. A drive carrying to the 200-yard marker will bound down the hill toward the green. Favor the left side to avoid the deep front right bunkers.
The Highlands and The Brute at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa

The first golf resort in Wisconsin to offer GolfBoards (available through June 2018), the golf experience at Grand Geneva offers two tournament-quality 18-hole courses. The Brute is rated one of the best in the Midwest and The Highlands is a Scottish Link style course. These courses are as challenging as they are beautiful.

Pro Tip: The Brute course has some of the largest greens, which makes it difficult to see how severe the undulation is. Do your best to keep the ball below the hole on your approach shots into these massive greens.

Majestic Oaks

Located among 275 tree-lined acres, Lake Lawn Resort’s championship golf course in Delavan is a historic masterpiece, first opened in 1921 and then spectacularly re-engineered in 1990 by renowned architect Dick Nugent, known for his work at Kemper Lakes. This course is best known for its stately oaks, deep sand bunkers and subtle undulations.

Pro Tip: Hole 12 is the most scenic and one of the hardest to birdie at Majestic Oaks. This par 5 plays 514 yards from the blue tees as the lake guards the entire left side of the hole, tee to green! There is room right to bail out on your tee shot but it will take a miracle shot to reach it in two. A plethora of bunkers guard the right and left sides of the green with the tiniest opening between them to slither a shot through. Your best option is to play a second shot leaving you a comfortable short club that you feel accurate with. Any shots pulled left here will find the water or a treacherous bunker that will make for an impossible up and down.

Evergreen Country Club
Voted Best Public Course in the county and rated 4 stars by Golf Digest, the 27-hole course at Evergreen Country Club is recognized as an outstanding value. The course features rolling greens, sweeping fairways and abundant water hazards. Be sure to try the slow smoked barbeque at the new Bunker Grill, Bar & Que at Evergreen.

ProTip: When playing a scramble format, know your limits. Don’t try and hit shots you wouldn’t normally play in a regular game of golf.

Como Crossings and Barn Hallow at Hawk’s View Golf Club
Serious golfers choose championship caliber Como Crossings for its spectacular views and a 7,074-yard, par-72 challenging layout. Como Creek winds throughout the course, complementing the scenic woodlands and rolling topography. Beginners, families and kids enjoy a walkable par-3 experience on the Barn Hallow course.

Abbey Springs
Set on Geneva Lake’s beautiful south shore, Abbey Springs offers spectacular views of the lake and it’s surrounding hillsides. Featuring 18 holes of carefully manicured greens, lush fairways, beautifully tended trees and wooded hillsides, Golf Digest rated this course 4 ½ stars.

Pro Tip: Abbey Springs is full of uneven lies, which means you need a slower swing tempo. Select one club longer than needed from the same distance on a flat lie and position your feet slightly wider than your shoulders to reinforce the slower swing concept.

When planning your golf visits to Lake Geneva, be sure to take advantage of resort packages and other specials available. Spend a week or pull a one-nighter with the range of Stay & Play offers at Geneva National Resort & Club.
