11th Hour Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

Featuring Fox River Distilling Company's Bennett Mill Bourbon

This one has a bit of a story for us. In the summer of 2014, we had been booked to bartend a wedding reception in Wheaton. The couple, who was originally from Wisconsin, wanted to use The Old Fashioned as one of their signature drinks for the reception, but they had one request: they needed a version that both the groomsman and bridesmaids would love.  Naturally, the bridesmaids were the challenge. So two weeks before the event, my girlfriend Dawn and I set out to make this version a reality and spent a Sunday afternoon experimenting; I know, poor us. Our hard work paid off and everyone loved our version, including the bridesmaids who indulged in multiple refills. Below is the recipe for you to make it at home.

Level of difficulty: medium

Ingredients: bourbon, Sprite or 7-up, Cherry Bitters, simple syrup, cherries, and an orange.

Tools: muddler, jigger, spoon, rocks glass

1.       Cut the orange into ¼ inch half slices.

2.       Take the orange slice and rim the inside/rim of the glass with the peel facing your palm.

3.       Place the orange slice from step 2 in the bottom of the glass with a cherry.

4.       Add ¼ oz of simple syrup to the fruit at the bottom (optional: add a drop of honey for extra sweetness).

5.       Add 3-5 dashes of cherry bitters to the other ingredients (use more increase sweetness).

6.       Add 2 – 2 ½ ounces of Bourbon to top (suggested: Bennett Mill Bourbon)

7.       Muddle the ingredients until the orange is smashed and the cherry is blended with the bourbon (if you  don’t have a muddler, use the end of a wooden spoon).

8.       Add ice and a light pour of Sprite or 7 up.

9.       Stir the muddled fruit to evenly distribute throughout the glass.

10.  Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

11.  Enjoy!

Notes: We had the pleasure of using Bennett Mill Bourbon from Fox River Distilling Company for our recipe this week. It has a great finish with enough sweetness and polish to use in our 11th Hour Old Fashioned. Fox River Distillery Company is proudly located in Geneva, IL.
