Comings & Goings: Golden opportunity for cook turned owner

After just a couple months in business, Golden Egg Pancake House might prove that the third time is a charm.

The restaurant at 459 S. Randall Road in North Aurora was formerly Mother’s Pancake House, and most recently Randall Crossing.

Rogelio “Roy” Angeles, of Aurora, said the restaurant is a dream come true for him after years of working in the kitchens of local restaurants, such as Mother’s Pancake House, Southern Belle, among others.

“I’ve been working too many hours (for others),” Angeles said about the realization that led to his decision to open his own restaurant. “Finally, I’m going to do it,” he said before quitting his latest job as a cook.

Angeles, who moved from Mexico to the U.S. when he was about 14 years old, said his family thought he was crazy when he told them about opening his own business, but he was determined.

After dropping out of West Aurora High School at age 17, Angeles said he took jobs at restaurants and learned the ins and outs. Now, at 36, Angeles said he’ll do whatever it takes to make his own restaurant a success.

“I need to work for me,” he said.

Angeles bought the business three months ago from the former owners of Randall Crossing. Just recently he changed the name after his girlfriend’s children gifted him with a golden egg cartoon.

Since opening, business has improved 20 to 30 percent, Angeles said. He said that initially the restaurant was very slow, and he was worried that it was not going to make it, but their focus on customer service and quality is paying off. Almost everything on the menu is homemade, he said.

Some Golden Egg specialties include pancakes, omelets, skillets, wraps and burgers. Early bird specials are available for $6.99 from 6 to 10 a.m., and lunch specials are $7.99 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Golden Egg opens daily at 6 a.m. for breakfast and lunch. Learn more at www.goldeneggpancakehouse.com, find Golden Egg on Facebook, or call them at 630-326-9807.

Sushi + Rotary Sushi Bar, the western suburbs first “Kaiten-style” sushi restaurant, recently opened in Aurora at 4430 Fox Valley Center Drive, Suite 106, next to Naf Naf Grill.
