Finance Committee approves ‘farm-to-table’ restaurant deal

The city’s Finance Committee unanimously approved a plan for a “farm-to-table” restaurant in downtown’s Restaurant Row Tuesday.

Modesto Ventures LLC, owned by Plainfield couple Daniel and Sofia Modesto, plans to purchase 37 W. New York St., a bank-owned property, and 35 W. New York St., a property the city bought earlier this year. The 37 W. New York property was formerly home to the Comfort Zone Restaurant until late 2011.

The Modestos plan to redevelop the two properties into one restaurant with indoor seating for about 90 on New York Street immediately west of Chef Amaury’s Epicurean Affair restaurant.

Sofia Modesto, who has a culinary arts degree, said the restaurant will serve cuisine that is contemporary and rustic. Everything will be made from scratch and they will serve local craft beers and wine in an effort to support other family-owned local businesses, she said.

Aurora had everything they were looking for in a location to open a restaurant, Sofia Modesto said.

“It’s a very sweet location,” she said.

The Modestos are civil engineers, according to Chief Development Officer Bill Wiet, and this will be their first time opening a restaurant. A chef instructor at Joliet Junior College will consult on the project, said Daniel Modesto.

Alderman Rick Mervine, 8th Ward, said he liked the restaurant concept, but he had questions about the funding of the project. He asked if the couple will have the funds to operate and market the restaurant after it opens.
