Owner: Salerno's hopes to reopen Monday after fire

Salerno's on the Fox, an iconic downtown restaurant damaged by a fire during Wednesday's dinner hour, could reopen as early as Monday, owner Joe Salerno said.

"We hope to keep the icon going," he said.

A city building inspector, companies specializing in disaster restoration services and representatives from an engineering firm, an insurance company, Nicor Gas and the Illinois Commerce Commission were at the Italian restaurant Thursday to assess the damage and begin the recovery efforts.

"It's very unfortunate that they had a fire, but this is definitely a situation where circumstances could have been much worse," said Joe Schelstreet, the city's assistant fire chief.
