A restaurant chain called Smashburger will begin its push next month into the Chicago area when it opens a restaurant in the former 3 Day Blinds store in the shopping center at the corner of Fabyan Parkway and Randall Road.

“We like Batavia,” said David Prokupek, chairman and CEO of the Denver-based Smashburger. “It’s got great neighborhoods and great demographics.”

The 2,000-square-foot restaurant is set to open around Dec. 8. The fast casual restaurant sells burgers, chicken sandwiches, milk shakes, and bottled beer and wine.

The restaurant is similar to Fuddruckers in that it allows customers to build their own burgers. Fuddruckers at one time was planning to open a restaurant in Batavia, but has dropped those plans.

“About 1/3 of our customers create their own,” Prokupek said.

Batavia Assistant City Administrator Randy Recklaus said he thinks the chain will do well in the city. Several new restaurants have opened recently in Batavia, including the Honey-Jam Cafe, which opened in August in the former Bennigans restaurant on Randall Road.

Burgers – which are made from 100 percent fresh Angus beef – are made to order in four to five minutes, Prokupek said. A 1/3-pound burger costs $4.99, while a 1/2-pound burger sells for $5.99.
