In Vino Veritas

A sampling of fine wine and spirits from around the Fox Valley.

Lynfred Winery
Summertime and the living’s easy...  Warm weather encourages simpler tastes and flavors; it encourages freshness. Even red wine lovers seem to thirst for something lighter. Here are our recommendations of some sassy summer sippers:

Sparkling Rose’ – this brut-style bubbly is crisp and clean and our favorite to sipper to enjoy with a picnic lunch.

Chenin Blanc – This svelte and pretty white is packed with tropical flavors and aromas that jump out of the glass. We love to enjoy this wine while watering our flower gardens.

Rose’ – The quintessential Ravinia wine if there ever was one! This Rose’ is light and dry, yet refreshing, and is a staff favorite with picnics and barbecues.

Kiwi-Rose’ and Mango wines– Our newest members of the Lynfred family are making a big splash poolside! These light and slightly sweet fruit wines are lovely while soaking up some rays.

Cranberry Wine – We like to mix this delightful wine with some bubbly and then sit in some bubbly! That’s right; enjoy a Cranberry Sparkler while sitting in the hot tub!

Geno’s Fine Wine & Spirits
Anderson Valley-Brother David Triple Belgian Style Triple 10.0%ABV 20IBU’S OG. 1.092

The front of this beer starts off with, much of a strong intense note of sweet yeast and rock candied sugar ,that  gives way to more notes of sweet drenched sugared sweetness of citrus, fruit notes such as tart zesty lemon, fruity juicy peaches, and apricots with mildly sweet earthy vanilla notes. The middle continues with more intensely notes of sweet tart lemon flavored yeast, with attached notes of  sweet fruity grainy malty earthy herbal notes of the malts. The middle back also tastes of notes of sweet and mildly tart and toasted crisp smooth malty grainy toffee and vanilla notes. The Beer finishes, with a crisp, clean, smooth easy drink mouthfeel-along with  vanilla sweetness, mild caramel with toffee notes fighting back and fourth for position being balanced by a nice rush onto the palate of clove spicy herbel dryness to clean the palate to finish this marvelous beer.

Gibby’s Wine Den

Monterey is one of California’s premier appellations for Pinot Noir.  It is a cool climate varietal and the cool breezes that blow off the Pacific plus the very limited rainfall it receives supports grapes that offer rich flavors and textural complexity.

Carmel Road’s 2008 Pinot Noir ($18.95) is both rich and complex with aromas of black cherry and spice on the nose and palate plus a touch of raspberry that gives way to a smooth finish.

Protos (meaning “First” in Greek) is the leading winery in Ribera del Duero, Spain.  The harvesting of their grapes is done 100% manually as they strive to make quality a priority over everything else.   Bodegas Protos’s 2008 Verdejo ($12.95) offers citrus and tropical fruit aromas while the palate is well-rounded and dry with nicely balanced acidity.  It is a wonderful accompaniment to many menus such as shellfish, seafood, light pasta and rice dishes, mild cheeses and vegetables.

The “Decoy” wines have been an important part of the Duckhorn family for the past 20 years.  An affordable option for the consumer but with the quality one comes to expect from Duckhorn.  These wines have their own unique style and are meant to be enjoyed upon release. The 2007 Duckhorn “Decoy” Red Blend Napa Valley ($31.95) greets the nose with red fruit, spice and cedar.  Abundant flavors of cranberry, red currant and cassis are showcased on the palate with a subtle hint of orange peel and coffee.  The finish is long and lovely.
