The City of Aurora's Veterans Advisory Council (AVAC) Hosts Vets Week Aurora 2018

The City of Aurora’s Veterans Advisory Council is planning VETS WEEK AURORA beginning on Armed Forces Day, May 19th and running through Memorial Day, May 28th. This week-long, event includes the following events:

May 19th, Saturday:
FREE Picnic and Patriotic Concert at Cool Acres, 500 Block Clearwater Drive, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, food served from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, music provided by the Aurora American Legion Band from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM.

May 20th, Sunday:
5K Fun Run, Walk, Woof and Roll at Phillips Park, 1000 Ray Moses Drive, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Kids 10 and Under - $5, Adults and Seniors - $15. Register through eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vets-week-aurora-2018-5k-fun-runwalk-woof-and-roll-tickets-43252757161?aff=efbeventtix. All runners receive a t-shirt compliments of Grunt Style, a Veteran Owned and Operated Company. Bring your family and friends and show your support by signing up your entire family and most importantly, don’t forget to include “ROVER”.

May 21st, Monday:
Veteran Resource Fair, 150 W. Illinois Avenue, Aurora, IL 60506 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. At 7:00 PM, the Paramount Theatre will be showing Hacksaw Ridge as part of their Monday Movie Night series.

May 22nd, Tuesday:
Women Veterans Empowerment Expo Hosted by the IL Department of Veterans’ Affairs. This event will offer a variety of resources for Women Veterans and their families. Also, the Fox Valley Marines Detachment 1233 and the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry Northern IL Food will passing out food to the first 250 Veterans, compliments of the Fox Valley Marines Detachment 1233. Event takes place at the Painters District Council No. 30 at 1905 Sequoia Drive, Aurora, IL 60506.

May 23rd, Wednesday:
You’re A Grand Old Flag Art Reception. A reception and award ceremony will be held to congratulate our youth in their interpretation of the US Flag. Event takes place at the Santori Public Library, 101 S. River Street, Aurora IL 60506 at 6:00 PM. Art exhibit runs from May 16th through May 29th.

May 24th, Thursday:
BBQ Fundraiser to be held at IBEW 461, 591 Sullivan Road, Aurora, IL 60506. Event will run from 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM and be catered by Reulands. Tickets are $15 for your choice of pork chops, pork chop/chicken combo, ½ chicken or prime rib sandwich along with sides.

May 25th, Friday:
Join us as we honor Veterans who served in Iraq/ Afghanistan GWOT . Event takes place at the Fox Valley Park District’s Prisco Center, 150 W. Illinois Avenue, Aurora, IL 60506 at 6:00 PM.

May 26th, Saturday:
VETS WEEK Judged/FREE Cruise Night, which will take place at West Aurora Plaza, 2131 West Galena Blvd, Aurora IL 60506 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM. There is no entry fee for vehicles. 50/50 drawing with music provided by Carousel Sound. The Salvation Army Cantina will be on hand and we will be conducting a blood drive hosted by Heartland Blood Center.

May 27th, Sunday:
Additional Names Added to Monument. Two additional names will be added to the Veterans Monument at Phillips Park. Event begins at 11:00 AM, with a reception following in the Stover Center. A fly over will also take place during this ceremony and we will unveil our first memorial brick.

May 28th, Monday:
The City of Aurora’s Annual Memorial Day Parade, Downtown Aurora, Steps off at Noon.
VETS WEEK AURORA in conjunction with the State of IL Bicentennial Celebration. Sponsorship opportunities are available. By showing your true colors and patriotic spirit, you will be providing and supporting a network of needed resources for our local Veterans and service members as well as their families. To be able to honor and celebrate our Veterans gives us that opportunity to give back to each of them by building a broad range of services and assistance to enhance their physical, emotional and economic well being. Their service to our country will never end, nor should our honor.
