Suit alleges gender, age abuse at work
A former school principal has filed a federal lawsuit against District 304 alleging officials discriminated against her for her age and gender in a two-year campaign of abuse.
In her complaint, Margaret Pennington, 52, of Geneva, former principal of Heartland Elementary School in 2008, claims she was “subjected to a pattern of abuse which included being publicly marginalized through a series of petty acts.”
The abuse prompted Pennington to seek professional help in dealing with extreme emotional distress and depression, according to the lawsuit.
Pennington’s suit also claims that younger, less
experienced male principals received more pay and support from district officials while she was marginalized.
She was reassigned to the central office as Coordinator of Special Projects and Resource Procurement in 2009, where her job included securing grant applications, but that it was largely clerical. In her complaint, Pennington said officials blocked her efforts at being successful and she was formally terminated June 30.
