The city is selling a former stone quarry property at Interstate 88 and Route 25 to a recycling company.

Heartland Recycling will acquire the 51-acre site for $1.25 million, according to city Development Director Bill Wiet.

The city acquired the property in the mid 1980s for $50,000, hoping it would one day lead to an increased tax base.

“What that was going to be, we didn’t necessarily know,” Wiet said.

Wiet said six companies responded to a request for proposals issued by the city, and two companies provided two options each. All of the options were highly competitive, he said.

As part of the agreement, Heartland Recycling will remediate the land according to Illinois Environmental Protection Agency standards and will accept certain types of clean construction landfill from the city or city contractors during the next decade.
